Carrickfergus Castle is one of the best-preserved Norman castles in Ireland. Here's your complete guide to visiting this magnificent 12th-century fortress.
Carrickfergus Castle is one of the finest Norman castles in Ireland — a remarkably well-preserved 12th-century fortress perched on the shores of Belfast Lough in County Antrim.
History The castle was built around 1177 by Anglo-Norman knight John de Courcy following his conquest of east Ulster. It remained an important military fortification for over 750 years, used by the English Crown through the medieval period, garrisoned during the Williamite Wars, used as a prison in the 18th century, and serving as an air raid shelter in World War II.
The Castle Today Carrickfergus Castle is now managed by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and is open to visitors year-round. The four-storey keep is the oldest surviving part of the structure and offers excellent views across Belfast Lough. Inside, there are displays about the castle's history, medieval artefacts, and replica armour.
The castle grounds are used for historical re-enactments throughout the year, particularly the annual Beltain Celtic Festival and the Medieval Banquet evenings.
