Downpatrick & St Patrick's Heritage: A Complete Guide

15 August 20255 min read

Downpatrick is the home of St Patrick's heritage — the traditional burial site of Ireland's patron saint. Here's your guide to this historic County Down market town.

Downpatrick in County Down is one of Ireland's most historically significant towns — traditionally regarded as the burial place of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

Down Cathedral The most important site in Downpatrick, Down Cathedral (Church of Ireland) stands on the hill above the town on the site of an ancient monastery. According to tradition, St Patrick founded a church here and was buried in its grounds following his death in 461 AD.

A large granite boulder in the cathedral grounds marks the supposed burial site of Patrick, Brigid, and Columcille — the three patron saints of Ireland — though historical evidence for the exact location is mixed.

The cathedral itself is an attractive medieval building with later additions. It's open to visitors free of charge and is well worth a visit for its atmosphere and historical associations.

Saint Patrick Centre The award-winning Saint Patrick Centre in the town centre tells the story of Ireland's patron saint through interactive displays, film, and artefacts. It's the starting point for the Saint Patrick's Trail, a heritage route linking key Patrick-related sites across Ulster.

Inch Abbey Just outside Downpatrick, the ruins of Inch Abbey — a 12th-century Cistercian monastery — stand in a picturesque location beside the River Quoile. The abbey ruins appeared in Game of Thrones as Robb Stark's encampment.

Downpatrick & County Down Railway A narrow-gauge steam railway operates on certain Sundays and special occasions — a charming heritage experience for families.

Struell Wells A few miles outside Downpatrick, Struell Wells is an ancient pilgrimage site associated with St Patrick. The historic buildings at the site include a 17th-century eye well, a drinking well, and an unusual bathing house.

St Patrick's Day in Downpatrick Every 17th March, Downpatrick hosts one of Ireland's most authentic St Patrick's Day celebrations — a traditional church service, parade, and community events.
